About Course

The Celestial Navigation Series is a group of courses designed to enhance understanding of the art of celestial navigation, from basic to advanced concepts.

Each lesson features notes and links to follow up your learning. In most films, actual example problems are computed. This is a practical “how-to” series.

The designed audience is threefold:

1. Professional Coast Guard and merchant mariners who desire to increase their knowledge of navigation (or are mandated to do so).
2. The general sailing community.
3. Anyone interested in learning about the art and science of celestial navigation.

There are three individual sections:

1. Getting Started in Celestial Navigation. (The Marine Sextant, The Noon Site for Latitude, Precision, The Pole Star).
2. Going Further in Celestial Navigation. (Lighthouses in the Sky, The Sunline, The Solar Running Fix, A Day With The Sun).
3. Advanced Concepts in Celestial Navigation.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand the fundamentals of celestial navigation, including key concepts like lines of position and running fixes.
  • Learn to take accurate sextant sights of celestial bodies (Sun, stars, planets) and apply necessary corrections.
  • Master the use of the Nautical Almanac and other essential tools like H.O. 229 and the Universal Plotting Sheet.
  • Gain practical skills in calculating latitude and longitude using celestial objects at different times of the day.
  • Explore the geometric principles behind celestial navigation, such as solving spherical triangles.
  • Become proficient in interpreting the Global Hour Angle (GHA) and Local Hour Angle (LHA) of celestial objects.
  • Understand how to use star charts and planetary data for nighttime navigation.
  • Learn the process of direct calculations for celestial fixes without relying on sight reduction tables.
  • Develop confidence in applying your knowledge to real-world navigation scenarios, both at sea and on land.
